How you measure success as a salesperson may be different from how you measured success beforehand. This is only made more true when you are selling for yourself and for no one else. That of course doesn’t mean that you don’t get any help, but rather that those people who help you are also in it for themselves. You will probably have some help at succeeding from your dealers and your friends and a spouse if you have one. You might even get some help from family members because taking care of a business on your own is a lot of work, but there is nothing that makes you feel more successful than knowing that all of the money that you made that month you made on your own, with your own resources. It is a very different feeling from having made the money working under someone else. Southwestern Company knows this, which is probably why they make a point of making sure that none of their interns each summer really works for them, but instead they are required to work for themselves, help themselves through the summer. It goes a long way in building a stronger character.

The truth about their student’s success is something that they often share with each and every one of them however. Those who are picked to be summer interns and sell books, those who can make it through one summer and are willing to come back for more, they would have been successful with or without Southwestern Company . It is because these are the people who are always willing to work hard . The company is actually there to bring it out in the young men and women. It helps unearth the potential in each person. This is why at the beginning of each year they like to honor those who did so well last year because it wasn’t Southwestern that made them who they are, they just brought it out in them and encouraged them. The awards and the ceremonies later are just to show them that they will be honored for what they do if they always work that hard.
