My recent stay in one of the downtown hotels Jackson, Mississippi was excellent due to a walking tour of the historical downtown buildings. I’m not much of an expert on architecture, but I do know what I like. So, being able to know the history behind each building, which by-the-way every one is beautiful, was extremely interesting, more interesting than I thought.
The first building on the tour was the Old Capital. The architect was William Nichols who was from England, then he moved to the States in the 19th century and was hired to be the states architect. The style he created was a Greek Revival. It was completed in 1840. So, in 1903 the state got a new Capital building and now this one is being used as the states historical museum. Our next stop was at City Hall. It’s style is known as an antebellum building. It was built in 1847 andsurvived the burning of Jackson. The building now has a new facade that replaced damaged done by the fires. A portico was added the 20′s. It still is being used as Jacksons City Hall an d houses the Masonic Lodge and Odd Fellows Hall. As far as buildings go, I like this one better than the Old Capital building, because it fits in with a southern lifestyle, where the Greek, to me, does not.
The final building on the tour was the Mississippi Supreme Court Building. It’s currently under construction. I’m not sure why that would be put as last on a tour, because there wasn’t much to see. Maybe, it was for us to witness the begins of a creation that will be on tour hundred years from now, instead of imagining the construction of a building back in the 1800′s. Well, at least, that’s what I’ll make of it.
