Brisbane City of History
Brisbane is the capital of the state of Queensland in the country of Australia. There are about two million people living in Brisbane, Australia thus making Brisbane the third largest city in the country of Australia. Brisbane is built up on a low lying flood plane between the Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range of south eastern Queensland, Australia. The Brisbane river runs through this city. The indigenous people of this area called it Mian-jin meaning the place shaped as a spike. The name for Brisbane came from the noble man Sir Thomas Brisbane who was the govenor of New South Wales, Australia from 1821 to 1825. The first European settlement in Queensland was a penal colony established at Radcliff in 1824 some seven teen miles north of where Brisbane sits today. The settlement was soon abandoned and subsequently moved to the North Quay in the year 1825. Free settlement was allowed begining in the year 1842 and the state of Queensland was established as a separate colony from New South Wales in the year 1859.
